Ever have a session that wasn’t picture-perfect—but turned into a story you’ll tell for years?
That was Dawson and Ashlyn’s engagement shoot—perfectly imperfect in all the best ways.
It was Labor Day weekend, the kind where the smell of campfires lingers in the air and Wilson Lake hums with campers, laughter, and that last bit of summer magic. The plan? Pop a bottle of champagne to celebrate the newly engaged couple. Easy enough, right?
Well… not quite.
The Champagne Fizz
We couldn’t get the champagne to pop (classic), so we improvised with my Alani drink instead. Because when you’ve got a dock, a camera, and two people madly in love—who needs bubbles anyway? Eventually, Dawson and Ashlyn made a quick store run for a “proper” bottle, determined to make that pop happen. And when it didn’t? They did what any good Midwest couple would do—forgot the rainbow and chugged it.
A Cloudy Day, but the Perfect Calm
It was one of those overcast, no-sunset evenings—no golden light, no sky show. But with no wind and a perfect 75 degrees, the lake felt calm and content. Their picnic setup by the water fit them to a T—simple, real, and full of laughter.
And Dawson… at least your truck didn’t get towed this time.
A Love That’s Weathered a Little Fire
These two have already walked through more than most couples—literally. They got engaged after their dryer caught fire, forcing them to live out of a hotel for a week. But through it all, they kept smiling, hand in hand. That’s the kind of love worth celebrating.
