Family Session | Anita, Iowa

Danielle came out with her full crew, her husband Tony, their three grown daughters Shelby, Aubry, and Kaytlyn, Shelby’s fiancé Justin, and their 14-year-old toy poodle Missy. They’re a blended family, married back in 2009, and like most families with adult kids, getting everyone together at once doesn’t happen often anymore. This session was about pausing life for a minute and capturing that rare moment when everyone was in the same place. Danielle was honest from the start. Tony isn’t exactly thrilled about photos, but every year she makes it happen. And honestly, those are usually the people who end up giving the most genuine smiles once they relax. No pressure, no forced posing, just letting things unfold naturally. They had dreamed of a beach session, but since Iowa isn’t exactly known for ocean views, the lake was the perfect substitute. Fall showed up big time with warm tones, soft light, and just enough breeze to keep things comfortable. Everyone kept it simple with jeans and fall-colored tops, which tied in beautifully with the surroundings without feeling overdone. We blended a little bit of everything during the session. Posed group shots for the wall gallery, candid moments in between, a mix of color and black-and-white, and plenty of laughter. The girls joked around, Shelby and Justin shared those easy, engaged moments, and Danielle soaked in being surrounded by her kids again, even if just for an evening. They came prepared with a thoughtful shot list, full family, parents together, sisters together, mom with each daughter, couples, and different combinations that reflected their relationships. We used it as a guide but let the session stay flexible, leaving room for moments that couldn’t be planned. One of the biggest goals for this session was connection. Danielle booked this not only to update their family photos but also to get comfortable with me before Shelby and Justin’s wedding next October. That time together matters. When wedding day comes, there’s already familiarity, trust, and understanding, which always makes the experience smoother and more meaningful.

This session was a reminder that family photos don’t have to be stiff or complicated. Sometimes they’re just about showing up, laughing a little, and documenting the season you’re in right now. Grown kids, new chapters starting, and a family that still shows up for each other when it counts. Thanks for having me be your photographer and capturing this moment.
