New Faces on Familiar Ground with Jade Made
When I arrived at their family farm outside New Market, Iowa, I was welcomed the way you hope to be welcomed anywhere that matters. Shoes by the door, last-minute outfit tweaks happening in real time, and conversations that skipped the small talk entirely. We talked life. We talked farming. We talked about how they knew me. The good stuff. The connective stuff. This was the very first official family session with this crew, and I could tell immediately it meant something. Not the stiff, stressful kind of “everyone better behave” something. The meaningful kind. The kind you do because family matters and you want proof of this season before it changes again.
This session was a gift for the in-laws. A thank-you wrapped in photographs. And honestly, you could feel that intention the entire time. Let’s set the scene. Proud farmers who love their home, their land, and apparently the Huskers. Three kids grown and married. One son-in-law, one daughter-in-law. And four grandkids who absolutely run the show. The grandkid lineup included two girls, ages eleven and nine, fully in their sporty era and deeply invested in friends and fun. And then the two three-year-old boys. Tractor enthusiasts. Car aficionados. Best friends with wildly different personalities and absolutely zero interest in standing still longer than necessary. Which is exactly how it should be.
This family didn’t come in with a Pinterest board or a must-have shot list. They trusted me. Fully. Which is honestly one of the greatest gifts a photographer can receive. Their only real hope for the session?
“A fun photo shoot where everyone has their eyes open and are smiling.” A reasonable goal. A bold one. We rose to the occasion. They wanted fall vibes, which the farm delivered effortlessly. Browns, burgundy, greens. Earthy tones that made sense here. Nothing forced. Nothing trendy for trend’s sake. Just outfits that belonged in the place they were standing. The kids? Outgoing, confident, comfortable. The youngest was a little shy at first, but being surrounded by cousins on the farm where they all love to play worked its magic. Tractors became conversation starters. Movement became the bridge. Laughter followed naturally.
That’s always the goal.
What I loved most was how easy it felt. Holiday gatherings and family vacations are their thing, and you could tell. There’s a rhythm to families who actually enjoy being together. A quiet shorthand. The kind of comfort you can’t fake for a camera. And that’s where the magic lives. We leaned into a mix of posed portraits and candid moments. The in-between glances. The laughter that happens when someone breaks the pose. The moments that feel less like “photo shoot” and more like “this is just us.” Mostly color. A few black and white frames that felt timeless. The kind you picture framed on walls, tucked into albums, and pulled out years from now with stories attached. Because that’s always the goal.
To capture.
To create.
To give you something you can cherish.
This stage of life may not feel monumental day-to-day, but one day it will. The kids will grow. The farm will change in ways both big and small. And these images will quietly hold the memory of who everyone was right here. Why did they book me?Because they loved the work. Because they wanted a photographer they could grow with. And because I’m from Southwest Iowa too. That part matters more than people realize. Shared ground has a way of showing up in the images.By the end of the session, we had what they hoped for. Smiling faces. Open eyes. Real moments. And something even better than a “perfect” photo.
We had proof. Proof of a family that shows up for each other.Proof of a farm that holds memories.
Proof that sometimes the best sessions don’t need a plan. They just need trust.
And honestly?
