A few months ago, I had the honor of capturing Rydder Hogan’s first senior session at the Iowa State Fair. His connection to agriculture, his love for cattle, and the milestone of last year showing at the Iowa State Fair. The vibrant atmosphere of the fairgrounds made for an unforgettable shoot, showcasing his personality and passions against a backdrop that held so much meaning for him.
For his second session, we traded the bustling fairgrounds for a quieter, more personal setting—Rydder’s home turf in Lenox. This time, we embraced the landscapes and surroundings that truly represent his day-to-day life. From sprawling fields to the workshop where he spends countless hours tinkering on trucks, this session felt like stepping into Rydder’s world.
Photographing Rydder in his home environment was an entirely different experience. It's always my favorite capturing someone in a space where they feel completely at ease, and that’s exactly what this session was about. Whether we were taking photos near his truck or by the pasture , every location added another layer to the story of who Rydder is.
We even incorporated some of his favorite pastimes into the session—shots of him with his hunting gear, moments with his truck, and even a few with the family farm tractors and combine. These details are such a big part of his life, and it was important to highlight them.The contrast between the State Fair and his home stomping grounds couldn’t have been more perfect. While the fair was about celebrating achievements and showcasing his competitive spirit, this session was a nod to the quieter, everyday moments that have shaped him. It was a reminder of where he’s come from and the hardworking values that have been instilled in him.
Rydder’s easygoing personality shone through again, but this time, there was an added sense of pride. He wasn’t just standing in a place where he’d achieved a specific goal—he was surrounded by the places and things that have made him who he is. As we wrapped up the shoot, I couldn’t help but reflect on Rydder’s journey so far. From the State Fair to his home in Lenox, it’s clear he’s someone who embraces every part of life with gratitude and determination. His future in welding is bright, and I have no doubt that the same work ethic that’s driven his success in the show ring and on the farm will carry him far.
Rydder’s story is a reminder that greatness often starts at home. It’s in the fields we’ve grown up in, the barns we’ve worked in, and the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Capturing that story through photos has been a privilege, and I’m so excited to see where his next chapter takes him.
